Camp update Dec. 24th 2010

Winter is here, everything is frozen up, the snowmobiles are out, the ice auger is ready, and we are ready!
Things are pretty quiet here right now, Chad put a skating rink in the other day, I have groomed cross country ski trails around the lake, and we have even been doing some ice fishing. Everyone is off for the holidays now, Sue finsihed Wensday, Emily came home from school on this past Friday, we are ready for a family Christmas.
We hope to spend our Christmas day out on Brusaw Lake fishing and cross country skiing, the weather is supposed to be mildand the sun should be shining, can not think of a better way to spend Christmas day.

We have already had our Christmas miracle, our neighbor Cristine's cat had been missing for a while, we assumed that a fox or wolf may have gotten it. When Emily came home for the holidays we put the heat on in cabin 1 for her, the first night when she went there at about 11:30 she heard meowing under the floor and came and got me. There is a hole under the side of the cabin where the cat had gotten under. Well when Chad did the snowplowing the hole got covered up and trapped the cat. In total the cat was trapped under the cabin for 22 days without food or water, he came out pretty thin but is alive and well.
If Emily was not here for Christmas the cabin would not have been used until spring!

This is the type of tip up we use for winter fishing here. The line is tied to the tree branch, when the branch starts to bounce up and down you are getting a bite. We were not getting many bites today but could not beat the day.

Camp update November 19, 2010

I think winter is here, the lake will be frozen over by morning, there is snow on the ground and it is quite cold out.
I have finished some of my trapping and getting ready for a trip to the states for Thanksgiving, once I return there will most likley be enough ice to go out and catch a few fish.
Everything is winterized here, the plow truck is ready and all the outside work except putting up Christmas lights is done, I tell Sue that I need nasty weather to put outside lights up or it just doesn't feel right. I put a star on top of a 75ft tall spruce tree last winter and thought I would be smart and leave it up so I did not have to climb the tree again this year ( I really don't like the climb, kind of scares me). Well it backfired I ended up climbing the tree about 10 times to try to get it to light , finally took it down for repairs and put it back up. It would have only been one climb if I would have taken it down to start with. Will I take it down this year? Probably not.

I do not have all of my winter projects sorted out yet, but a few af them are putting a new ceiling in our house, building a groomer and track setter to make some cross country ski trails around our place. I will also be the opperations manager at the local ski hill this winter, which will be basically grooming the ski hill, cross country trails and running the tow lift. It will be a good thing to get me out of the house more in the winter. I also hope to be curling again this year.

Fur Harvest

Here is more of the fur ready for shipment, I will commence more trapping after a trip to the states for Thanksgiving.

At present time I have 65 Beavers, 3 Otters, 6 Mink, 12 Martin, 2 Fishers, 3 Ermin and a few Muskrats ready for shipping.

You don't see the tree in this picture, but it is not fun to climb and after about 10 trips up it and taking the star down for repairs it is finally working.

It is time to check out the lights in preperation for the holiday season, note the star in the top of the tree, I thought I would be smart and leave it up from last year so I did not need to climb the tree this year. Well so far I have climbed the tree about 10 times and the star still won't light.

Paquette's Camp update Oct. 26, 2010

The season is officially closed, the last customers for the year left Friday. Now comes the work of draining water, and closing things up. The 2nd group of Moose hunters left with a nice cow moose, and the last group of hunters did not have any luck in their hunt.

Other than shutting the camp down for the winter I have started trapping, at present I am at about 40 Beavers , a few Otters, and a few Muskrats. The season for land animals such as Martin, Fisher, Mink, Lynx opened yesterday and Chad and I spent the day setting traps, by the time we were finished the fog had set in. It was a good thing that we were almost finished or it would have been a very nervous ride from the other end of the lake, if we could have of found our way and not had to spend the night.

It is still warm and rainy here but supposed to be cooling off by the weekend which I would rather see than the rain this time of year, hope to get a few more trips out in the boat before freeze up though.

Well it is time for a trip to town and then working on yesterdays catch.

I just started Beaver trapping, this is the first days catch, 14 Beavers and 2 Muskrats, now the work starts of preparing the skins.

Bull #2 for Ken

Ken had the luck to shoot both bulls that their group got this year. Congratulations again Ken!

After a little effort they are able to pull the moose to their truck. It's all work after you take the shot.

Well it sounded like a good idea, and it eventually worked, the Moose did get pulled out with the quad with no one getting hurt.

Update for Sept 25th, 2010

It really feels like fall is here now, we have been getting frost at night now. the cold has given me the incentive to get a new woodshed put up. My brothers were here last week and helped me with that project, between that and fishing every day the week was quite busy, the building went well and the fishing was good. Wish I could say the same for the weather, we have had lots of rain the last few days, the water is almost to the top of the docks.

Archery moose hunters will be coming in tomorrow, hope I can have some pictures for you in a few days. I will be busy starting to get things taken care of for the winter with an expected closing date of about Oct 20th. Dosen't seem possible that the summer is over already!

It won't be long until I will be putting up pictures with snow in them , hope that it waits for a while.
It will be a long winter if it started now.

Can bears read

I think that the bear can read the sign and knows that he should not go inside, don't know wether he can read the french or the english.

Bear Problems

We have still had a few bear problems this week , one tried to come into our porch on the weekend, but he has not gone into the trap. All has been quiet the last few days so mabye he has wandered off.

Paquette's Camp update Sept 12, 2010 Week of the Bear

Well we have a few bear stories for you this week, first I would like to congratulate Bill on his successful bear hunt. Bill hunted about 1/2 hour the first day of his hunt and got a nice 200 pound male bear. The bear stories do continue from there though. As usual when I go fishing with Dave we leave his wheelchair on shore, This day was no exception, we went out on the lake, it was cold and a little rainy but we did well with the fish. When we returned to shore I could see Dave's chair sitting upside down with the wheels all straight up, I was sure that I knew the reason why too! I went up to look at the chair only to see that it had been chewed up by a bear and that the bear had left with the seat cusion as well. After some looking I found the cushion with big holes chewed into it , the bear had left his mark. What they find interesting about something like a wheelchair I don't know, but Dave will be looking over his shoulder from now on when in Bear country. It could have been worse Dave could have been in the chair, at least it gives him good stories.

That night was the final bear story, we had just gone to bed and Sue looked out the window when she walked by it only to see a bear at our bedroom window. We chased it off a couple of times then went to sleep. We must not have done a very good job of scaring it off because it was back sometime during the night. In the morning we could see paw prints on the siding where it was looking into some of our windows. You may ask, "Where were the dogs while this was happening,"? Well they were treated so good by the people in cabin 1 that they were there sleeping instead of at home guarding our place.

Of course there are other stories , Jim had his line snapped by a big fish only to catch the same fish about 1/2 hour later and get his lure back. Of course there is no photographic evidence to prove it , but that is the story. I was there as a witness. (Big head skinny body right Deb)

It was truely nice to have Jim and Deb here and it was really neat that they brought Jim's sisters Joan and Diane and Joan's husband Jim with them so that they could see where there late father Martin DeBoer came for many years. We all miss Mart (Ace) but it is plain to see that there is a part of him still alive in his children. It even looks like he taught them to fish and mabye even to tell a few fish stories!

Watch out for the BEARS

Dave will be looking over his shoulder from now on. Dave left his wheelchair on shore while fishing and when he came back he found that a bear had chewed his chair up. He said that the cusion is under warranty for leaks, guess we will find out if that covers bear attacks!

Bill shows off his nice 200 pound Black Bear, he shot his bear within the first 1/2 hour of his hunt. Lots of time for fishing now. Congratulations Bill!

Paquette's Camp update Aug 25, 2010

We made it back from our vacation, it was a cold wet week but we had a good time anyway,leave it to us to go fishing on our time off.

We are starting to feel fall in the air here, Sue and the kids are getting ready to go back to school and I am trying to catch up on some projects. I finished putting sliding glass doors into cabin 2, put a new roof on cabin 6 and will be starting a shed tommorrow. Chad has started preparing for the bear hunt for me, putting baits out, clearing trails etc. , the bear are very active right now, should be a good hunt.

I am also enjoying the company of Wendy and Dianne some of the people I was coming to Paquette's Camp with before I came to stay! Great to see you guys, and nice of you to bring Ed with you as well, haven't seen him in 25 years.

Would also like to thank Kim and Corey for sending me pictures of her big fish so I can share it with everyone.

On our way to take Ryan to the airport in Timmins we were blessed to see this White Moose. There is a small population of them in the area around Foleyet, about 1 hour from the camp.

Camp update for Aug 15th 2010

The past week included all of the normal things such as Fishing , Kayaking, Relaxing etc, but the highlight of the week was the Lew-Wow. It was decided to have a Hawaian night, what a great success ! They even named it in my honor. The weather was perfect it was hot and sunny all week, it even felt like Hawaii! Everyone joined in with the fun. Tammy, Marylin, Crissy, and Emily were the organisers, THEY DID A GREAT JOB. A special thanks them and everyone else that made it a success. Can't wait for next years !
ps. Sorry I could not get everyone in the pictures below, mabye next year.

We are closed this week so that we can enjoy some time with our family, believe it or not we are going into a fishing camp that Sue and her siblings helped her Dad build from the ground up. Myself and many of the others have never been there,too bad Sue's dad could not be around for it , sure there will be many memories of him while we are there. No one from the family has been there since he passed away 15 years ago, I'm sure it will be a great experience!

Well its my turn to be on vacation will update when I get back.
